Mahama Vows Tough Enforcement of Truck Weight Limits to Protect New Roads

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to strictly enforce axle load and weight limits on heavy-duty trucks as part of measures to preserve Ghana’s expanding road network.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Wa Big Push Project on Tuesday, November 11, President Mahama cautioned transport operators against overloading practices that accelerate road deterioration.

He cited Burkina Faso’s recent enforcement of weight restrictions as a model for maintaining durable roads, revealing that some truck operators overload vehicles in Ghana only to redistribute the excess weight before crossing into Burkina Faso.

“Burkina Faso wants good roads; we also want good roads,” the President said. “We will not allow people to load one truck with 120 tons and then divide it among three trucks at the border.”

President Mahama emphasized that while government continues to invest heavily in road construction, sustainability remains a top priority.

“I am serving notice, we will soon hold stakeholder engagements with all players in the transport sector. Once implementation begins, we expect full compliance so that these roads we are building today will last longer than two or three years,” he stated.
