At least twelve potential recruits are feared dead following a tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise, according to emerging reports.

Sources indicate that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue, while several injured individuals are receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency and intensive care units.

Security personnel swiftly cordoned off the area and blocked major roads leading to the stadium to restore order and facilitate rescue operations.

The Ghana Armed Forces had earlier confirmed six fatalities, but updated information gathered later revealed that the death toll had risen to twelve, with several others still in critical condition.

In an earlier statement, GAF explained that the chaos ensued when thousands of eager applicants, seeking to secure enlistment into the military, surged toward the gates of the stadium.

The combination of the massive turnout, inadequate crowd control, and intense pushing and shoving reportedly triggered the deadly stampede, leaving dozens injured and others trapped in the commotion.

Authorities have assured that investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the public awaits an official update from the Ghana Armed Forces on the revised death toll and the condition of the injured.
