Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of six young women during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

In a statement issued after his return from Angola, the former president described the news as “devastating” and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

“I returned from Angola to the devastating news of the tragic deaths of six potential recruits into the Ghana Armed Forces, with several others receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries sustained from the incident, at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra,” he said.

Akufo-Addo conveyed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured recruits a speedy recovery. He also extended words of comfort to all those affected by the tragedy, including parents and guardians of the victims.

“It is my hope that each day will bring you renewed strength. May the Lord be with us all at this difficult moment,” the statement added.

The incident, which occurred during a recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, has sparked widespread grief and renewed calls for improved safety protocols during public enlistment processes.
