DR Congo kept their World Cup dream alive after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Nigeria in the African playoff in Morocco. The game ended 1-1 after extra time before DR Congo won 4-3 on penalties.

Captain Chancel Mbemba scored the winning spot-kick after substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu—brought on just before the shootout, made two crucial saves.

Nigeria started strongly, taking the lead in the third minute through Frank Onyeka. But DR Congo fought back and levelled in the 32nd minute when Meschack Elia finished off a quick counterattack.

Both sides had chances in a tight and tense encounter, but neither could find a winner in extra time.

The victory means DR Congo move on to the inter-confederation playoffs in March, where six teams will battle for two spots at the 2026 World Cup. DR Congo are hoping to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 1974.

Nine African teams have already qualified: Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Ghana, Cape Verde, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Algeria and Tunisia.

Bolivia (South America) and New Caledonia (Oceania) are also confirmed for the six-team playoff tournament, with more teams to be decided from Asia and CONCACAF this week.
