President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to what he calls Ghana’s long-standing family and moral values, stating firmly that gender is determined at birth and that the family unit remains the bedrock of the nation.

Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, during a courtesy call by leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana, President Mahama stressed that his views on family and social values are fully in line with those of the Council.

“A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position. So there are no questions or equivocations about what we believe,” he said.

He further emphasized that his stance mirrors that of the Christian Council.
“I believe that we are completely aligned with the Christian Council in terms of your belief,” he added.

President Mahama also expressed support for the Speaker of Parliament’s proposal that the bill currently before the House be relaid and debated, to allow room for any amendments or clarifications.

“We agree with the Speaker to relay the bill and let Parliament debate it, and then if there are any amendments or whatever that have to be done,” he said.

Ultimately, he insisted that the decision of Parliament and the will of the Ghanaian people will determine the way forward.

“If the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses the bill, votes on it and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” he declared.
