Ablekuma Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Frank Nkansah, says single-use plastics have become a costly burden on the municipality, stressing that improper disposal is choked drains, congests communities and significantly increasing sanitation expenditure.
Speaking on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben with Bismark Brown, the MCE cited areas such as ICGC and Onion Side as heavily impacted by plastic waste. He however noted that the growing plastic problem could also serve as an avenue for job creation.
“We have young people who are finding innovative ways to reuse single-use plastics. When properly managed, this cannot only reduce municipal costs but also create economic opportunities,” he explained.
Mr. Nkansah disclosed that the Assembly plans to create designated plastic collection and processing centers to support youth entrepreneurship in recycling. He revealed that several companies are already buying plastics from residents, and the Assembly intends to formalize and regulate the market to boost income generation.
He added that once implemented, the initiative will help decongest communities, cut sanitation costs, and provide sustainable jobs for the youth.
