EC Sets December 30 for Kpandai Parliamentary Rerun

The Tamale High Court has cancelled the 2024 parliamentary results for the Kpandai constituency and directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a fresh election within 30 days.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Brew Plange, follows a petition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who challenged the validity of the December 7, 2024 poll.

Wakpal argued that the election was marred by irregularities, citing discrepancies on Form 8A (popularly known as the pink sheet) from 41 out of the 152 polling stations. He claimed the violations breached Regulations 39 and 43 of the Public Elections Regulations (CI 127).

The court upheld his claim, stating that the non-compliance significantly affected the credibility of the results and undermined the integrity of the election process. It therefore ordered a complete rerun of the parliamentary election across the constituency.

The affected seat is currently held by Matthew Nyindam of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who had been declared the winner.

The ruling brings closure to a highly contentious electoral dispute. On election day, chaos erupted at the collation centre, with allegations of vote-tampering leading to the destruction of ballot materials and the removal of biometric verification devices. The tension led to heavy security deployment in the area.

The EC is now expected to issue a new timetable in accordance with the court directive.
