NPP warns High Court ruling on Kpandai could endanger future elections

The Northern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected a High Court ruling ordering a full rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election, describing the decision as a “miscarriage of electoral justice” with dangerous implications for Ghana’s democracy.

Addressing a press conference at the Regal Hotel in Tamale on Friday, November 28, the regional executives said the ruling, delivered on November 24 by His Lordship Justice Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, was fundamentally flawed. According to them, the petition before the court challenged results in only 41 out of 152 polling stations, yet the judgment annulled the entire constituency’s parliamentary results.

Reading the statement, Northern Regional NPP Communications Director, Yussif Danjumah, condemned the decision as a “complete miscarriage of justice”.

He argued that individuals who violently disrupted the collation process and destroyed electoral materials had not faced prosecution, yet their actions appeared to have been “rewarded with a judicial reset of the election.”

“This sends a catastrophic message: that violence can overturn lawful elections,” he warned.

Mr Danjumah further cautioned that if the ruling is allowed to stand, it could set a dangerous precedent for future elections in Ghana.

“If this precedent is allowed to stand, future electoral contests in Ghana will be endangered. There shall be no lawful rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election under this defective order,” he said.

He disclosed that the party has already initiated processes to challenge the decision.

“All appellate legal avenues have already been activated. The mandate of the people of Kpandai shall be defended by every lawful means,” he added.
