The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has described the 2026 Budget as one of the most health-focused financial plans in recent years, highlighting its potential to significantly improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, December 1, Mr. Akandoh said the budget demonstrates government’s renewed commitment to strengthening the health sector, noting that it places the well-being of citizens at the centre of national development.

According to him, the 2026 Budget is the most people-focused and health-centered budget I have seen in recent years, adding that it aligns strongly with the ministry’s research priorities and long-term health agenda.

He stressed that no country can achieve productivity without investing in the health of its people.

“The health of the people in every nation is the wealth of the nation,” he said, emphasising President John Dramani Mahama belief that access to quality healthcare is a right, not a privilege.

The Minister also highlighted the economic value of investing in health. He noted that globally, every dollar invested in the sector yields two to three times its economic return.

For this reason, he said, government does not view health expenditure as a cost but as a strategic investment in national prosperity.

Mr. Akandoh announced that the 2026 Budget allocates GH¢34 billion to the health sector, representing a 9.4% increase over the 2023 allocation.

The figure also accounts for more than 11% of total government expenditure for 2026, signalling what he described as clear prioritisation of healthcare delivery and infrastructure.

He assured Ghanaians that the Ministry of Health remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure that the increased investment translates into improved services, stronger systems, and better health outcomes for all.
