Let’s support women’s football to the maximum – Tony Baffoe urges

Former Ghana international Tony Baffoe has urged the nation to rally behind women’s football, with a special call for greater support for the Black Queens.

Baffoe shared his thoughts on X following Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to England in an international friendly on Tuesday night. Despite the loss, the former defender, now General Secretary of the Professional Footballers’ Association of Ghana (PFAG), said he was encouraged by the team’s performance.

He posted: “Walaiii Black Queens we have a team! Let’s support women’s football to the maximum. Our ladies are solid!!!”

Tuesday’s friendly formed part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the third consecutive time the country will host the tournament. WAFCON kicks off on 17 March and ends on 3 April 2025.

Baffoe’s call adds to growing pressure on authorities to show more commitment to the women’s game, which has long suffered from underfunding and delayed payments.

In October, the Black Queens boycotted training over unpaid bonuses ahead of their 2026 WAFCON Qualifier against Egypt. Players were owed bonuses from the 2024 WAFCON campaign in Morocco, with Joy Sports reporting each player was due 9500 dollars.

The team even considered boycotting the first leg in Ismailia before later deciding to play after meetings with senior officials. Their strike resumed when promises to settle the outstanding payments were not fulfilled.

The issue stretches beyond the senior team. The Black Princesses, Ghana’s under 20 side, have also not received their per diems from their World Cup Qualifier against Tunisia in September, another reminder of the persistent financial challenges facing women’s football in the country.
