We cannot keep piling taxes on an already burdened taxpayer - Finance Minister

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has reiterated government’s commitment to building a fair and sustainable revenue system as he paid a working visit to the Osu Tax Service Centre on Saturday.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, December 8, 2025, Dr. Forson said the visit was to engage and motivate the staff responsible for the country’s domestic revenue mobilisation efforts.

According to him, Ghana has made notable progress in expenditure control, while the Bank of Ghana continues to perform strongly; however, domestic revenue must now rise to the challenge to complement the gains made.

He stressed that the purpose of his visit was not to interfere with the work of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) but to demonstrate his support.

“I emphasised that my visit was to encourage, not to interfere. I will not obstruct revenue collection, no matter whose ox is gored,” he stated.

The minister expressed concern about the country’s frequent resort to increasing taxes instead of expanding compliance and improving collection efficiency.

“It pains me anytime we resort to higher taxes instead of widening compliance and improving collection. We cannot keep piling taxes on an already burdened taxpayer,” he said.

Dr. Forson announced that beginning next year, government will roll out new electronic tools to strengthen revenue mobilisation.

He also revealed he will dedicate nearly half of his time to advancing the country’s revenue transformation agenda.

He expressed optimism that with collaboration and commitment, Ghana can build a more equitable and robust revenue system.
