Authorities in Morocco have launched an investigation after a residential block collapsed in the city of Fez, killing 19 people and injuring 16 others.
The structure, which housed eight families, came crashing down, prompting emergency crews to cordon off the neighbourhood as they dug through rubble in search of survivors.
Officials say they still cannot confirm how many residents remain unaccounted for, and the cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.
Fez, Morocco’s third largest city and home to the historic old medina, continues to grapple with ageing infrastructure. In May, another building caved in, killing 10 people. Safety regulations in older districts are often inconsistently enforced, leaving many residents exposed to recurring risks.
