Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has formally submitted the Sports Fund Bill to Parliament, aimed at improving financial support for sporting disciplines beyond football.

Presenting the bill for consideration, the Minister emphasised that the establishment of the fund would significantly accelerate the development of sports across the country. The move comes as Ghanaian athletes prepare for qualification campaigns ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games and other international competitions.

Addressing Parliament, Kofi Adams highlighted long standing funding challenges within the sports sector, noting that football has traditionally received the bulk of financial support.

“It’s quite clear that over the years, this House has struggled with issues relating to sports funding. Resources are mostly directed towards football, when in fact sports in this country go far beyond football,” he said.

He stressed that several previous attempts to create a sustainable financing structure had fallen short, leaving many sporting disciplines under resourced.

“There have been many efforts to develop a system that will allow the Ministry to effectively execute its programmes and extend support to a wider range of sports disciplines,” he noted.

Kofi Adams expressed confidence that the passage of the Sports Fund Bill would mark a turning point for the sector.

“When approved, we will no longer grapple with the challenges of financing our sports. This fund will help sports grow and contribute to national development, supporting many progressive activities in the country,” he added.
