Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has inaugurated a new Board of Directors for the National Sports Authority (NSA), in a move aimed at strengthening the governance and professional management of sports in the country.

The 15-member board will be led by Dr. Fred Awaah as chair, with NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah serving as a key member.

Other members of the board include Bawa Fuseini, Samuel Duku Sarfo, Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh, Is-Haku Al-Hassan, Dr. Luguterah Austin Wontepaga, Samson Deen and Richard Akpokavie, among others. During the swearing-in ceremony, Dr. Awaah pledged that the board will work to reposition sport from a mainly social activity into an engine for national economic development, highlighting priorities such as job creation, revenue mobilisation and improved infrastructure.

The new board’s mandate covers the management of national sports facilities, promotion of mass participation in sport and the provision of better support systems for Ghanaian athletes competing internationally. Its inauguration follows Cabinet approval of the nominees in line with Section 4 of the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934), which requires the establishment of a governing board to oversee NSA operations.

Board member Samson Deen, who doubles as President of both the African Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Paralympic Committee, welcomed his reappointment and reiterated his commitment to youth development, good governance and inclusion in sports.

He also appealed to corporate Ghana to partner with the government to unlock sport’s full potential as a unifying force and driver of economic growth.
