The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for a reconsideration of the CK Tedam University of Technology Applied Science (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to rename the Upper East based institution as the University of Technology Applied Science in Navrongo.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, the minister said while the naming of the university after C. K. Tedam was intended to honour his legacy and contributions to the region, such decisions must be handled carefully to avoid overlooking other personalities who also played significant roles in the area’s development.

“So many of these things, if not done well, further polarize and disunite the area. So it is without prejudice to the standing of any personality and the recognition of these personalities’ contribution to the development of Northern Ghana, Ghana and their community, but it is only fair that the university is named as University of Technology Applied Science in Navrongo,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu expressed optimism that a broader consultative process would help uphold professionalism and preserve peaceful coexistence in the Upper East Region. In a related response to the Tolon MP, he stressed the need for balance in honouring individuals. “Let the consultation be thorough and reflect the historical antecedence of the area. If you name one in honour of one and fail to name one, you may not be helping the cohesion of that society,” he added.
