Abubakar Sadick, popularly known as Cyborg, has been convicted and fined GH¢24,000 for unlawfully discharging a firearm during the AfroFuture concert.
The conviction follows his arrest a day earlier after a video circulated on social media showing him firing several warning shots at the event. In the footage, Sadick admitted that his actions were illegal but said he fired the gun in honour of Nigerian artiste Asake, who was performing at the festival.
Speaking at a press conference, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed that Sadick has paid the fine imposed by the court and that his firearm licence has been revoked.
Upon his plea of guilty, the court convicted him on the charges and cautioned that celebratory gunfire and the misuse of firearms pose serious risks to public safety and will not be condoned by the justice system.
The offences fall under Ghana’s Firearms Act, 1962 (Act 118), which criminalises the unlawful possession and indiscriminate discharge of firearms, even when the weapon is legally owned. The law provides for fines, custodial sentences, or both, depending on the circumstances of each case.
The Ghana Police Service has once again warned the public that firearm licences do not permit the discharge of weapons in public places and that offenders will face arrest, prosecution, fines, or imprisonment.
