Road contractors commend Mahama government for clearing arrears, boosting road projects

The Association of Road Contractors has praised the Mahama administration for clearing part of the arrears owed to road contractors, a development expected to accelerate road construction projects across the country.

The payments are part of allocations captured in the 2025 Budget, aimed at settling outstanding debts and reviving stalled road projects.

Speaking on the matter, the immediate past Chairman of the Association, John Afful, confirmed that a significant portion of the arrears has already been paid and expressed optimism that government will continue to clear the remaining balances.

“The initial assurance was that some funds would be released to reduce the debt, and we have seen progress. The Minister of Roads has indicated that over GHS5 billion has been paid into outstanding projects, with contractors encouraged to return to site. This is very welcoming, and we are already seeing some contractors resume work,” he said.

Mr Afful further highlighted additional government interventions, noting that the President recently announced the release of GHS1 billion to contractors, while the Road Fund Board had about GHS2.5 billion as of the end of December, which is currently being disbursed.

“At least something is being done, and if this continues, we will be grateful because the arrears will keep reducing,” he added.

Mr Afful expressed confidence that the ongoing payments will boost contractor morale and improve delivery of road projects under the government’s Big Push agenda, ultimately bringing relief to road users across the country.
