Kwetey Slams Calls for Mahama Third Term, Describes Them as ‘Pure Sycophancy’

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has strongly criticised party members calling for a third presidential term for President John Dramani Mahama, describing such calls as the height of sycophancy.

Speaking at a gathering, Mr. Kwetey expressed concern over what he described as a growing culture of excessive praise and blind loyalty within the party, warning that it poses a threat to the NDC’s democratic values.

According to him, some individuals have wrongly come to believe that flattering party leaders is the only way to gain relevance or secure personal advantage.

“It saddens me when I see sycophancy creeping into our party,” he said. “Some people think singing praises is the only way to survive, and that is why you even hear calls for a third term.”

Mr. Kwetey dismissed such appeals outright, describing them as “pure sycophancy and boot-licking of the highest order,” stressing that they have no place in the NDC’s tradition. He noted that the party has never encouraged the glorification of individuals at the expense of democratic principles, citing the late former President Jerry John Rawlings as an example.

“Jerry Rawlings, who founded this party, was never urged by anyone to seek a third term,” he said, adding that this underscores the difference between the party’s founding values and the conduct of some current supporters.

The General Secretary further accused proponents of a third term of acting out of selfish motives rather than genuine loyalty to the party or the nation.

“You don’t love our country, and you don’t love our party,” he stated.

Mr. Kwetey concluded by reminding members that the NDC was established to serve the interests of the Ghanaian people, not to advance individual ambitions.
