The Class of 1981 of Bekwai SDA Basic School on Sunday, 28th December, 2025, held a memorable and historic dinner and commemoration event at Agonaba Heritage Event Centre, bringing together former classmates to celebrate 60 years of life, friendship, and shared history.
The event, themed Together at 60, attracted classmates from across Ghana and the diaspora, with some members travelling all the way from the United States and the United Kingdom to be part of the celebration. In all, about 35 classmates joyfully celebrated their 60th birthday together, making the occasion both rare and deeply emotional.
The programme recreated fond school memories as members staged a match past, mock assembly, and classroom-style activities, reliving their basic school days with laughter and pride. These moments drew admiration from guests and onlookers, many of whom described the experience as nostalgic and heartwarming.
A major highlight of the evening was the honour accorded to their former class teacher, Mr. J. K. Mensah, whose impact on their lives was celebrated through a moving citation. The citation was presented amid applause and emotion, with teachers present at the event expressing deep appreciation. One teacher remarked that the gesture had renewed their motivation to teach with dedication and passion, after witnessing how a teacher’s influence can last a lifetime.
The gathering also featured a solemn remembrance of departed classmates and teachers, a tribute rendered by the class choir, and the presentation of gifts to members whose parents are still alive, in recognition of parental sacrifice and support.
The event was graced by Rt. Hon. Joseph Osei Owusu, former Member of Parliament and former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, alongside other dignitaries from Bekwai, adding prestige to the celebration. Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion, which many described as one of a kind in the history of Bekwai.
Members noted that the Class of 1981 is a unique association, as it is rare to find an active and united group formed purely from primary school classmates. The association was officially formed in 2019 after deliberate efforts by members to trace and reconnect with schoolmates, leading to the creation of a WhatsApp platform that has since grown into a strong support network.
Beyond social interaction, the group has consistently supported its members in times of need, demonstrating a bond that goes beyond nostalgia. Guests and community members expressed surprise and admiration at the depth of unity and organisation displayed by the group, describing the celebration as inspiring and deeply meaningful.
The Class of 1981 reaffirmed its commitment to supporting one another and preserving the friendship forged in childhood, pledging to keep the spirit of unity alive for generations to come.
