The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, calling on the international community to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement issued from Abuja, the regional bloc acknowledged the right of states to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking.
However, ECOWAS stressed that such efforts must be carried out in line with international law, particularly the obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states as enshrined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.
ECOWAS further aligned itself with a statement issued by the African Union on January 3, 2026, which called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela as a means of addressing the current situation.
Reaffirming its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, ECOWAS urged all states to respect the country’s independence and territorial integrity.
The bloc also expressed support for the people of Venezuela as they work towards shaping the future of their country through an inclusive and participatory process.
