The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has announced a planned interruption in electricity supply in parts of the Central Region, particularly Cape Coast and its surrounding communities.

In a statement released and signed by the Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, Esq., the power outage is scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The interruption is to facilitate the replacement of an existing 33MVA transformer with a new 66MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation.

The Ministry explained that the upgrade is a critical component of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen and expand the national power transmission infrastructure.

The installation of the higher-capacity transformer is expected to significantly improve the substation’s performance, allowing more households and businesses in Cape Coast and nearby communities to connect to the national grid.

In addition, the upgrade is projected to enhance the overall quality, reliability and stability of power supply in the area.

The statement assured the public that GRIDCo engineers, operating under the strict supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, have put in place all necessary measures to ensure the work is carried out efficiently and completed within the scheduled timeframe to enable prompt restoration of power.

While apologising for any inconvenience the planned outage may cause, the Ministry and GRIDCo reaffirmed their commitment to supporting national development through the delivery of reliable and improved electricity services.
