The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it is targeting an addition of about 200,000 new active contributors beginning this year, as part of efforts to expand coverage and strengthen Ghana’s national pension scheme.

The Director-General of SSNIT Kwesi Afreh Biney disclosed that the Trust currently has about 2.1 million active contributors, up from approximately 1.9 million in 2023.

According to him, the figure is expected to improve further as SSNIT intensifies outreach, enforcement, and public education to bring more workers, particularly those in the informal sector, onto the pension scheme.

“Starting this year, we will add again about 200,000 new active members to our active membership,” the Director-General said.

He explained that expanding the contributor base is critical to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pension system and improving retirement security for workers.

The Director-General also stressed that the Trust remains committed to making the scheme more accessible, efficient, and responsive to contributors, adding that increasing active membership is a key pillar of SSNIT’s growth and reform agenda.
