The Director of Ankaful Maximum Security Prison has made a passionate appeal for the construction of mechanised boreholes to address the persistent water crisis facing inmates at the prison camp.

The appeal was made during a visit by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who donated food items to inmates of the Ankaful Maximum Prison and patients of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital.

Speaking at the event, the Central Regional Commander of the Ghana Prisons Service and Officer-in-Charge of Ankaful Maximum Prison, Deputy Director of Prisons Joseph Asaboe, appealed to the Vice President and corporate Ghana to support the construction of mechanised boreholes to ensure a reliable water supply for the facility. He also called for assistance to complete an ongoing clinic project to help address the healthcare needs of inmates.

Deputy Director Asaboe further disclosed that the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service has introduced a shortcode to mobilise public support to help address the numerous challenges confronting the Service. He appealed to the general public to contribute generously to the fund.

The Vice President, during the visit, presented food items to the inmates, including bags of rice, sugar, cooking oil, tinned tomatoes, canned fish, bread, bottled and sachet water, oranges, cassava, and palm fruits.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Julius Xatse, also appealed to the Office of the Vice President to intervene in the growing encroachment by private developers around the hospital. He expressed concern over the construction of structures, including filling stations and gas plants, close to the hospital, describing the situation as a serious safety risk to both patients and staff.

Dr. Xatse said efforts by hospital management to halt the encroachment had so far yielded no results. He also highlighted the deplorable state of roads within the hospital, appealing to President John Dramani Mahama to consider constructing at least two kilometres of road from the “Big Plush” area to improve access to the facility.

Additionally, he appealed for logistical support, requesting at least one four-wheel-drive vehicle and a bus to help address the hospital’s transportation challenges.
Dr Xatse expressed profound gratitude to Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for her continued support to the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital.
