The Independent Power Generators (IPGs) in Ghana have commended the Government of Ghana for the successful settlement of a substantial portion of legacy arrears owed to power generation companies, describing the move as a major step toward restoring stability in the country’s energy sector.

In a press statement issued on Monday, January 12, 2026, the IPGs acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition in clearing long-standing payment obligations, particularly the payments made to Independent Power Generators in 2025.

According to them the settlement of the arrears marks a significant milestone in rebuilding financial stability and operational confidence across the power sector, which has been constrained for years by inherited structural challenges.

They said the achievement reflects decisive leadership, disciplined fiscal management, and a strong commitment by government to resolving long-standing sector bottlenecks.

The association highlighted the strategic role played by the Ministry of Finance in mobilising and deploying the financial resources needed to stabilise the sector, as well as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition’s disciplined implementation of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism and related reforms, which have improved payment performance to service providers.

The IPGs noted that these actions have sent a strong signal to both local and international investors that Ghana is committed to honouring its contractual obligations, strengthening governance in the power sector, and rebuilding credibility in the energy market.

They added that investor confidence has been significantly restored, positioning the country to attract new capital, advanced technology, and long-term partnerships.

Reaffirming their commitment to Ghana’s energy security, economic transformation, and industrial development, the IPGs pledged their full cooperation with government and sector agencies to sustain reliable power supply, support ongoing reforms, and promote efficiency, transparency, and value for money across the power value chain.

The association expressed confidence that the collaborative approach demonstrated in resolving the legacy arrears would continue to guide the partnership between government and IPGs toward a future of energy sustainability, financial discipline, and shared prosperity for the people of Ghana.
