The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate dismissal of the Director General and Board Chairperson of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) over the inclusion of gender identity content in the Physical Education teacher’s manual for Senior High Schools.

According to the Minority, the leadership of NaCCA failed in its oversight responsibility, allowing what it described as attempts by government to introduce LGBTQ-related activities into the SHS curriculum.

Addressing the media on Thursday, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, demanded the immediate withdrawal of all teaching and learning materials that contain such content.

“We on the side of the Minority demand the immediate withdrawal of teaching and learning materials containing LGBTQ-related content, including redefined concepts of sex, sexuality, sexual orientation, sexual rights and gender identity, from all schools,” Mr Assafuah stated.

He further called for the dismissal of the Director-General of NaCCA and the Chairperson of its Board, accusing them of failing in their oversight duties and breaching public trust.

“We say so because NaCCA is now telling us—assuming without admitting—that the document was developed by the NPP government in 2024. If you do not believe in it, why then go ahead to print them in 2025?” he questioned.

The Minority is also demanding a transparent and inclusive review of all affected teaching and learning materials. It wants the review process to involve Parliament, religious bodies, traditional authorities, parents, civil society organisations, education experts and teacher unions.

In addition, the Caucus is calling for a comprehensive parliamentary inquiry by the appropriate committee of the House to examine the development, approval, funding and circulation of the curriculum, including the role played by external partners.

The Minority further urged Christian and Muslim religious leaders to examine the Physical Education teacher manual and assess whether its contents align with their religious teachings.

“I once again, on behalf of my colleagues, call on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the 1Christian Council of Ghana, the Methodist Conference, the Presbyterian Church, and the Muslim community to carefully examine the teacher manual and determine whether its contents are consistent with the teachings of Christ and Prophet Mohammed,” the Old Tafo MP said.
