The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major fire outbreak at Anloga Market, also known as Anwonadwom, at Afful Nkwanta in Kumasi, with no casualties recorded.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, GNFS said the fire incident was reported at about 10:41 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2026.

Firefighters from GNFS Regional Headquarters Substation arrived at the scene nine minutes later, at 10:50 p.m., to find the blaze at an advanced stage, having engulfed a large section of the market.

According to GNFS, the fire was brought under control at approximately 2:30 a.m. and was fully extinguished by 4:08 a.m.

Firefighting operations were hampered by congestion within the market and the lack of segregation of wares, factors which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

However, swift reinforcement from the Manhyia and KNUST Fire Stations, supported by a water tanker and the availability of a functional fire hydrant within the market, helped prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining structures.

In all, more than 100 wooden and metal commercial structures, along with their contents, were destroyed by the inferno. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Peter Tetteh, his Deputy, and other senior officers were present at the scene, providing operational leadership and support throughout the exercise.

GNFS has commended the firefighting crew, led by ADO I Bright Amuzu, for their professionalism and dedication to duty.
