The Minority Caucus in Parliament has congratulated Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his election as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, pledging its full support ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a statement issued on January 31, 2026, the caucus commended the party’s grassroots for their dedication and urged members to unite behind Dr. Bawumia while intensifying oversight of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Minority described constituency executives, polling station organisers and volunteers across the country as the backbone of the party, calling on them to channel their energies into supporting the flagbearer’s leadership and holding the current government accountable.

The caucus further stated that its members, together with former NPP Members of Parliament, stand ready to provide strategic support to Dr. Bawumia, drawing on their parliamentary experience and record in government. It cited the party’s past electoral successes and key policy achievements, including the Free Senior High School programme, infrastructure expansion and digital economy initiatives, as a strong foundation for preparing towards 2028.

Turning its attention to the NDC administration, the Minority said its immediate priority would be to scrutinise government performance on issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians. Among its concerns, the caucus mentioned what it described as the depletion of Ghana’s gold reserves through questionable transactions, alleged financial losses linked to gold trading involving state institutions, challenges in public transport management, and the government’s response to illegal mining.

It also criticised the handling of youth unemployment, linking the situation to tragic incidents at military recruitment centres, and accused the government of failing to effectively curb galamsey, which continues to damage water bodies and farmlands.

Reaffirming the NPP’s unity and readiness, the Minority said the party remains focused on presenting an alternative vision for the country. It expressed confidence that, under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and informed by lessons from the 2024 elections, the NPP is better positioned to deliver accountable governance, economic revival and inclusive growth.

The caucus concluded by outlining its vision of a post-2028 Ghana, where the Free SHS programme functions efficiently, the economy delivers broad-based prosperity, and the country emerges as a beacon of democratic governance and economic innovation across Africa.
