Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.

The primary, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, was conducted to select the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election.

Baba Jamal secured 431 votes to clinch the nomination, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes. Mohammed Ramme obtained 88 votes, Dr. Yakubu Azindow garnered 45 votes, while Mohammed Najib received 1 vote. The results represent the combined totals from the two designated voting centres.
The closely fought contest generated considerable public attention, particularly amid discussions surrounding campaign practices.

During the primary, Baba Jamal’s campaign distributed items including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates.

He, however, maintained that the gestures were acts of goodwill and not intended to influence voting decisions.

With his victory, Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC into the Ayawaso East by-election.

Prior to the polls, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, had projected that Baba Jamal’s support was unlikely to exceed 38 percent, based on recent polling data and voter trends in the constituency.

According to the projection, Hajia Amina Adam the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure was leading the race with an estimated 54 percent support ahead of the primary.

Mr. Dankwah noted that even under the most favourable conditions for Baba Jamal, the data suggested a wide gap between the two leading contenders, making a significant last-minute shift in voter preference unlikely.
