Majority Caucus calls for annulment of Ayawaso East parliamentary primary

The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has called for the immediate annulment of the party’s parliamentary primary held in the Ayawaso East Constituency, following allegations of vote buying.

In a statement issued and signed by Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, who also serves as Leader of Government Business in Parliament, the caucus said it had taken note of widely circulated claims of electoral malpractice during the just-ended primary in the Greater Accra Region, describing the allegations as troubling and inconsistent with the party’s commitment to ethical politics.

The caucus strongly condemned the alleged conduct, stating that it runs contrary to the NDC’s broader agenda to “reset the politics of this country.”

After what it described as extensive deliberations involving both the core and extended leadership of the caucus, the Majority Caucus resolved to formally communicate two key decisions to the Functional Executive Committee of the party.

These include the immediate annulment of the Ayawaso East primary and the disqualification of any candidate found to have engaged in vote buying or related unethical practices from participating in a rerun of the election.

According to the caucus, any individual established to have been involved in the alleged misconduct should be barred from contesting in any subsequent primary following the annulment.

“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” the statement emphasized.
