‘We’re more than family’ — Afenyo-Markin speaks on bond with Kennedy Agyapong

The Minority Leader in Parliament and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has opened up about his long-standing relationship with former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, detailing years of personal and political collaboration, including significant financial support.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, February 16, 2026, Afenyo-Markin disclosed that Kennedy Agyapong invested $5 million into his business at a difficult time, without any formal contractual agreement.

“When my business ran down, Kennedy gave me $5 million; we didn’t sign any agreement. He took a risk on me by giving me that money. We’re more than a family; there’s a history to it. It’s not right to cut the relationship. It’s a relationship we have. If he won in Winneba, and so what? People should stop it, we have moved past that,” he stated.

His remarks come amid discussions following the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, where Kennedy Agyapong polled 644 votes in Afenyo-Markin’s constituency, compared to 79 votes secured by Mahamudu Bawumia.

Some party supporters had speculated that although Afenyo-Markin did not publicly campaign for Agyapong, he may have influenced the outcome.

Responding to the speculation, the Effutu lawmaker explained that Agyapong’s strong showing in the constituency was not surprising, given the numerous initiatives and support he had extended to residents over the years.

He also revealed that Agyapong had provided vehicles to assist with constituency activities.

Afenyo-Markin further announced plans to construct a major Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facility in honour of Kennedy Agyapong, a project he said was conceived five years ago.

“I’m constructing an ICT facility, which, being named after him, was conceived five years ago; it’s a big project,” he added.

He emphasised that their relationship remains intact, built on mutual trust, shared history and continued collaboration.
