The Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, chaired by Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has engaged a high-level delegation from Oceana Global, signaling potential growth in Ghana’s fisheries sector.
The delegation, which included James Simon, CEO of Oceana Global, Kathryn Matthews, Chief Scientist and Senior Vice President, and Tess Geers, Senior Research Director, discussed the organisation’s plans to establish its first African operations in Ghana.
The meeting centered on strengthening fisheries governance, advancing the country’s Blue Economy Strategy, and supporting the implementation of the new Fisheries Act.
The Committee highlighted the need to balance conservation efforts with the protection of livelihoods for artisanal fishers and coastal communities.
Dr. Jasaw expressed optimism that ongoing collaboration with Oceana Global would enhance sustainable ocean governance, bolster food security, and contribute to Ghana’s economic resilience.
