President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana has received its first new military helicopter, with three more expected to join the fleet.

The President made the disclosure on Monday, March 30, 2026, during a ceremony at which five new envoys presented their credentials, including Diarra Dime Labille of France.

He explained that the acquisition, carried out with the support of Emmanuel Macron, is intended to strengthen the air capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces, which has depended on an ageing fleet in recent years.

“With the kind intervention of President Macron, we have led a new acquisition of helicopters, four in total. One has been delivered, and we have a timetable for the delivery of the others. This is to help the air capacity of the Ghana military, which had been quite degraded over the years,” he stated.

President Mahama also expressed gratitude to Airbus Helicopters for fast-tracking the delivery process.

The new helicopters are expected to boost the operational readiness and rapid deployment capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly in responding to security challenges.

He noted that the move forms part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s military and address gaps created by years of reliance on outdated equipment.

The envoys who presented their credentials included representatives from France, Angola, Namibia, South Sudan, and China.
