James Marfo once again stamped his authority on the local table tennis scene after emerging champion of the Men’s Singles at the Damba Table Tennis Championship held on May 30 in Tamale.

The championship, organised by Table Tennis Hawks under the auspices of the Ghana Table Tennis Association, brought together top players from across the country, with the Tamasco Assembly Hall serving as the battleground for intense rallies and high-level competition.

Marfo’s road to the title was anything but easy. In the semi-finals, he produced a composed and confident performance to defeat Emmanuel Commey 3–1, setting up a much-anticipated final against home favourite Mohammed Ali. Marfo showed nerves of steel, controlling the game to record a 3–1 victory (11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7) and silence the Tamale supporters.

The triumph marked James Marfo’s second local title of the year and his second Damba Table Tennis Championship crown, having first won the competition in 2023. His consistency and composure once again underlined his status as one of Ghana’s most reliable performers on the domestic scene.

Speaking after his victory, Marfo was quick to give credit to God, the organisers, and those who have supported his journey. “I thank God for another Damba title and my second local title this year. I feel proud, and it is not my doing only, but the support of my manager, Mr Michael Legend Danquah, for believing in me and pushing me to aspire higher,” he said. “I cannot leave my coach Allan Whyte out, he has been fantastic, taking me through training day and night and also motivating me on and off the court”, Marfo added

“I will also thank my opponents for the wonderful sportsmanship shown throughout the competition. We are all winners, and it is all for the love of Ghana Table Tennis.”

The Damba Table Tennis Championship concluded with the presentation of medals and cash prizes to winners. For James Marfo, however, the night belonged to him, another title was added, another statement was made, and his name was once again etched into the history of the Damba Championship and Ghana Table Tennis as a whole.
