A notorious armed robber who allegedly shot and killed a policeman, Corporal Francis Abalo, has been shot dead in a shootout with the police.

Kingsley Kwasi Yeboah was killed after engaging the police in an exchange of fire at Nyamekye-Fadama Junction in Accra about 9:30 p.m. on September 8, 2016.Yeboah is said to have killed the policeman, who was attached to the SWAT Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command during a shootout at Asofan in Accra after he (Yeboah) and four others had attacked and robbed a family who had arrived in the country from Canada.Since the incident occurred in May this year, Yeboah had been on the wanted list of the police until he was killed on September 8.
His body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue.
One of Yeboah’s accomplices, identified as Edem Kelvin Appiah, who was arrested on July 22, 2016, is currently facing trial.
Three others (names withheld) are still at large.
Incident
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said Yeboah, who had been traced to his hideout, was the first to open fire upon sighting the police.
She said the police returned fire, leading to his death.
Yeboah, the leader of a gang of four, had, on May 19, 2016, attacked two brothers who had returned from Canada for the funeral of a relation in front of their house at Asofan.
Armed with a  pump action gun, a locally made pistol and a dagger, the gang allegedly attacked the victims at gunpoint and asked them to surrender all their belongings.
They robbed the victims of their bags and amounts of US$13,000, Can$4,000, GH¢250, Mastercards and three Blackberry mobile phones.
The taxi driver who took the victims from the Kotoka International Airport was also robbed of his sales of GH¢650.
The suspects later marched the victims to one of the rooms in their house and locked them up before they fled with the booty.
Police
After the victims had been freed by a Good Samaritan, they lodged a complaint with the police.
While investigations were ongoing, the police received a tip-off that one of the armed robbers, later identified as Yeboah, who responded to many aliases, including Moses, Kingsley, Samuel and Don, was hiding in a house at Asofan.
A police patrol team was dispatched to the scene and, in their quest to apprehend Yeboah, one policemen was killed.
Yeboah, after shooting the policeman, escaped from the uncompleted building where he was hiding.
When a search was conducted in his room, the Mastercard belonging to one of the victims in the Asofan robbery, two pairs of shoes, a pump action gun, two locally made pistols with 16 rounds of live ammunition, a dagger and a torch were retrieved.
Arrest
On July 22, 2016, police investigations led to the arrest to a member of the gang, Appiah, in Kumasi after he had allegedly taken part in another robbery.
During investigations, Appiah mentioned Yeboah as the leader of the gang and added that after the robbery, the items were shared in Yeboah’s house and that each was given GH¢100 for transport.
Mrs Tenge said around 9:30 p.m. on September 8, 2016, the police had information that Yeboah had been spotted at Nyamekye–Fadama Junction and a team of policemen were immediately dispatched to the area.
On seeing the police, Yeboah, who was armed, again opened fire, and the police responded by returning fire and hit the suspect on the chest, killing him in the process.
