Attribute insecurities to lack of ‘performance allowance’ for informants

An informant  of the Ghana Police Service has attributed the high spate of insecurities in the system under the auspices of the Inspector –General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu to the lack of allowances paid to informants who volunteer information leading to the arrest of criminals.
The informant (name withheld) told the host of ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show; Kwame Afrifa-Mensah on Accra-based Happy FM that the non-payment of the allowance to the informants has led to the criminals outwitting the police.
He told the host that the payment of the ‘performance allowance’ to ionformants was instituted by the former IGP Paul Tawiah Quaye  and continued by his successor Alhaji Mohammed Ahassan to motivate informants to provide information leading to the arrest of some criminals who commit heinous crimes against the state.
According to him, since the exit of the two gentlemen from the service the police service has reneged on the payment of the said ‘performance allowance’ to informants.
He maintained that since the police administration took a decision on the payment of the allowance to informants in the system, the informants do not feel motivated to volunteer information to the service leading to arrest of the criminals who have been emboldened in recent times.
The boys have the information about some of the criminals operating in the system but are reluctant to release it to the police for action to be taken he said.
He claimed the attitudes of some serving officers towards informants have seriously contributed to the aggravation of the security situation in system.
He mentioned Dr. George Akufo-Dampare, as one of the officers whose behavior is not contributing towards information sharing on criminals in the system.
He noted that if care is not taken the situation of insecurity will continue for a long time as the attitudes of some policemen toward informants do not change.
The police do not live with us in the ghettos and we live in it and know the movement of the criminals in the ghetto he claimed.
He reminded the police political promotions of officers and allow competence to take centre stage in the maintenance of law and order.
