Inter Allies Technical Director and former Ghanaian international Willie Kluste has advised the handlers of the Black Stars to explain the role of a general captain to the entire team and Ghanaians as a whole to understand what the person’s duties and responsibilities are.

André Ayew has been made the new captain of the Black Stars by head coach Kwasi Appiah ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt. Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan, as captain of the Black Stars.

Many people has advised Asamoah Gyan to reject the position as they believe it is an irrelevant position but the former footballer thinks otherwise.

Speaking to Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Happy FM’s Wamputu Sports, Willie Klutse explained the role of a general captain.

“ The work of a general captain is bigger than the work of a captain. He is mediator between the captain, the coach and management. He oversees to everything including the work of the captain”- he stated.

“The work Of a General captain is a big one. He together with the captain take decisions together because the captain can’t take decisions alone. The person is a general for the whole playing body. His role is bigger than that of a captain. The technical team must explain the role of the General captain for all to understand well”.

He continued that Dede Ayew would have to consult Gyan before taking decisions concerning the team.

“If Dede Ayew and his deputy takes decision, they have to consult Asamoah Gyan who is the General captain for his approval before they take it to the coach .Kwesi Appiah will speak with the General captain when taking a decision before he takes to the captain because General captain is above the normal captain . He is captain over the captain”

He however clarified that the work is the general captain is off the field because the captain rule on the field of play.

“The work of the General captain is off the field. His work is not on the field. On the field there’s nothing like a general captain but off the field, he is above the captain. The captain takes decisions on the field of the play”.
