The African Women’s Cup of Nations is on the verge of being expanded from eight to 12 teams from 2022 following discussions among Confederation of African Football Exeo, according to president Ahmad Ahmad.

CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad took to his twitter page to announce the development.

“With @CAF_Online’s #exco, we took a great decision today: feminine’s #AFCON will now engage 12 teams! They only were 8 until now. #CAF #Football”-he tweeted.

The Total Africa Women Cup of Nations is an international women’s football competition held every two years and sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It was first contested in 1991 but was not held biennially until 1998. Nigeria is the most successful nation in the tournament’s history, having won a record 11 titles, meaning they have won all but two of the previous tournaments. Ghana hosted the tournament in 2018.

The competition has served as a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup every other tournament since its inception in 1991.

Congo-Brazzaville was supposed to host the 12th edition next year but they pulled out due to financial challenges.
