GUTA threatens to stop paying tax if authorities fail to stop foreigners from taking over retail markets

The Greater Accra Region President of the Ghana Union and Traders Association (GUTA), David Amoateng, has said that they (GUTA) will stop to pay if the invasion of the retail markets by Foreigners not stopped.

According to him, foreigners are gradually taking over the retail markets.

Speaking on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show Amoateng said. “We shall stop paying taxes if invasion of the retail markets by Foreigners not stopped. We’re tired of Foreigners invading our retail markets. We shall soon strike. Ghana is weak and timid to enforce its laws so Foreigners are taking advantage of it.”

Retail traders in the Ashanti Regional capital and even in Accra have accused foreigners, Nigerians especially, of engaging in retail trade, contrary to Section 27 of GIPC Act 865 which prohibits non-Ghanaians from engaging in retail trade in the jurisdiction.

Amoateng also opined that Ghana should revise the law that covers retail trade if it cannot be enforced. “We should amend the laws if the state thinks Foreigners can engage in retail businesses in Ghana. Who is checking Foreigners who are invading our retail markets? Why arrest our members for enforcing the laws.”

Last month, about 17 shops were locked up at the same location as the police intervened once again. In no time, the closed shops were re-opened and calm was restored.
