A member of the Legal Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Abraham Amaliba has described the modus operandi of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) as archaic in this democratic era.

Commenting on the arrest of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr. Benjamin Agordzo for allegedly plotting with others to overthrow the government, Lawyer Amaliba revealed that lawyer of the suspect has not been granted access to his client.

Speaking on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ he disclosed that the BNI has always refused to grant access to clients by lawyers when they are picked up by the bureau. “It is against ones human right. It is basic for an arrested person to have access to his lawyers.”

According to him the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) formerly acted like the BNI until it was reformed some years back. “We need our laws to work.” He made known that for the sake of humanity and respect for human rights, the BNI needs to be reformed to prevent them from holding a suspect without granting her or him access to a lawyer.

Ghana’s Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) is holding a top police officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr Benjamin Agordzo for allegedly plotting with others to overthrow the government.

His lawyer Martin Kpebu has confirmed that the cop has been charged with abetment to commit treason for his alleged involvement in a coup plot and has not been granted access to his client since his arrest.
