Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is joining Argentinian side Estudiantes on loan after struggling for game time at Old Trafford this season.

The 29-year-old has struggled with injuries this campaign, making just one Premier League start, in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool in October.

The Argentina international has not played at all since the 3-1 victory over Brighton in November, despite United struggling with other injuries at the back. It was believed that it was a lack of fitness that was keeping Rojo out of the first team, but he is now moving back to his home country, in the hope of more minutes on the pitch.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had claimed it was unlikely the defender would leave this month, saying as recently as Tuesday: ‘I wouldn’t think so. ‘Marcos has been injured and has been working to get back and get fit again. At the moment it doesn’t look like it, no.’

However, the BBC report that he will now make the move to Estudiantes, who are currently 12th in the Argentinian league.

Things have not gone to plan for Rojo since Solskjaer took over, despite believing he was going to be an integral part of the team under the Norwegian. Rojo told MUTV last April: ‘It’s been very good. Since he [Ole] arrived, he’s had an incredible relationship with me.

‘When he got here, he told me I was part of his plans and that he wanted me to get myself fully fit. ‘He helped me a lot because I was coming off a bad run of injuries and he told me to not worry and just concentrate calmly on making progress in my rehab and recovery.’

The length of the loan deal is yet to be confirmed, but Rojo’s contract at United runs until the summer of 2021.
