The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney has reiterated the relevance and dominance of radio on ‘Happy Morning Show’ (HMS) as the world marks ‘International World Radio Day’.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Happy Morning Show’ (HMS)as part of Happy FM’s activities to commemorate ‘World Radio Day’ Affail Monney said:

‘’Radio is still relevant and dominant mass communication medium. The ‘World Radio Day’ should be a day for sober reflection; we check ourselves for what we are doing right and what we are failing to do and correct such mistakes, to harness the benefit of the power of radio.’’

Every year, February 13 is set aside as World Radio Day, to celebrate radio as a way of educating people, providing information, and promoting freedom of expression across cultures.

Affail Monney used the Rwandan genocide as a classic example of the power of radio if misused and cautioned journalists to be circumspect in their reportage.

‘’Radio is so powerful that in a space of hundred (100) days an estimated eight hundred thousand (800,000) Rwandans were killed in 1994. To avoid this unfortunate incident let all journalist be guided by national interest in the discharge of their duties’’ he admonished.

The 2020 edition of World Radio Day is under the theme Radio Diversity which further divided into three main sub-themes:

  1. Advocating for pluralism in radio, including a mix of public, private and community broadcasters.
  2. Encouraging representation in the newsroom, with teams comprised of diverse society groups.
  3. Promoting a diversity of editorial content and programme types reflecting the variety of
    the audiences.
