In fighting against the spread of coronavirus in Ghana, the President, Nana Addo with respect to directives from the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) put in place measures to help reduce the probability of Ghanaians contracting the virus.

One of such directives was the social distancing policy which in one way or another was quite difficult for Ghanaians to adhere to because of our culture. Regardless, the policy was practiced to the extent of commercial vehicles reducing passengers in order to ensure the social distancing policy was enforced.

The President also directed bikers not to carry any passengers as it was the only way for them to also practice this policy. But reports reaching Happy98.9FM indicate that individuals who use their motorbikes for commercial purposes, otherwise known as ‘Okada’ have disregarded the social distancing policy by carrying passengers.

Following up on the report was Happy98.9FM’s Joseph Nii Ankrah who visited the Agbobloshie market to confirm it.

Giving a report on the issue to the Happy Morning Show, Nii Ankrah revealed that the reports coming in were very true and that the Okada business was highly being patronized at the Agbobloshie market. “The social distancing policy is not being practiced in Agbobloshie at all. You can see people sitting in clusters everywhere but what is of a high concern is the use of Okada. The Okada business is booming here and you can see riders carrying passengers all around which is quite dangerous,” he said.

According to him, commercial vehicles in Agbobloshie were practicing the social distancing policy with 4 passengers per row vehicles now carrying 3 passengers per row which were commendable but the only worry was the Okada riders who were disregarding it.

The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo has lifted the partial lockdown placed on Greater Accra, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi but has insisted on Ghanaians regarding all other policies and preventive measures which include the social distancing policy.
