Accra’s gutters are persistently clogged, despite pressure on government and promises in return. A common complaint through the city is that when people clean out the gutters, waste will sit in a pile nearby and eventually find its way back. Piles of rubbish sit on street corners, picked on by birds. After a storm, plastic bottles washed out with the rain return to line the beaches.

However, a mountain of rubbish which sits close to the Ghana School of Law in
Makola-Accra has left many commuters and traders complaining.

Happy FM’s Joseph Nii Ankrah in a video reported on a huge pile of garbage that has been left on the road in the centre of the capital.

Speaking to some commuters and traders about the situation they said; “What are we doing about sanitation? The rains have started. This could easily generate into an outbreak [like] cholera. Look at this! We are also fighting a virus (COVID-19) which we have not won yet”.
A trader said, “the President must implement their plans for the capital to ensure that the streets of Accra are clean in line with his dream of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa”.
