The Deputy Communications Director for the ruling New Patriotic Party, Richard Nyamah, has said that the fact that his party won the 2016 elections with the current voters’ register does not make the register a good one.

In an interview with Kwame Afrifa Mensah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show, he explained that the NPP supports the compilation of a new voters register by the Electoral Commission because they believe the current register has a lot of issues.

According to him, he believes that the new register will give Ghanaians a clean register. He noted also that the new register will have a better security system than the current one.

“As we speak, they [EC] want to bring even better security systems with the new voters’ register. They are now adding facial recognition to it. If that is the case, shouldn’t we support this?”, he said.

When asked by Kwame Afrifa if the timing was favourable for the compilation, he responded: “Apart from 1995, the four previous voter registration exercises we did were done in election years”.

The Electoral Commission in a recent meeting with IPAC announced the compilation of a new voters register was set to start from late June to the end of July. It has also been announced that health protocols such as social distancing, the use of hand sanitizers and the wearing of nose masks will be observed.
