The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is being pressured to determine the future of the 2019/20 football season by some club administrators following the recent directive by government to suspend some sporting activities till July 31 as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Football activities have been put on hold since March this year due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The Ghana Football Association is still engaging its stakeholders on the future of the current season and is yet to decide on the way forward.

According to the General Secretary of the FA, Prosper Harrison Addo, the GFA will have to take a look at the legal aspect in terms of sponsorship before deciding on cancelling the season.

GFA president Kurt Okraku also mentioned that club administrators will suffer the most should the season be called off due to the pandemic.

However, some club administrators such as Abdul Salam Yakubu of New Edubiase United, Alhaji Karim Grunsah of King Faisal and Bechem United’s Professor Kwasi Darlington share a different opinion on the adverse effects of the cancelling the league.

According to them, the GFA should cancel the league so clubs can begin to prepare ahead of the new season.

“After listening to the President of Ghana, I have lost hope that the suspended league season will resume. The next briefing will be on July 31 and should we be allowed to play football, clubs will need weeks to go back to the field which takes us to August. I have lost hope and don’t think the league will continue am sure it will be cancelled”, Nana Kwasi Darlington told the media.

Abdul Salam Yakubu of New Edubiase United also said, “I don’t know why the Ghana FA president and his executives are still there waiting. There is no way we can continue with this league. There is no time for us to play this league if we want to synchronize with the European calendar. We should just cancel the league so clubs can plan and start preparing ahead of the new season”.

Some Premier League coaches have also indicated that they will need at least six weeks to prepare should the league restart amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The GFA has announced it will decide on June 30 whether to truncate or continue with the current season.

This will be the third season in a row if the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League is cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
