Security Expert Richard Kumador has positioned that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have failed in ensuring stability in the region as they have looked on for happenings in Mali to go against charters of the Unions.

Recently, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was forced at gunpoint by soldiers to resign. The militia has taken over the rule of government while they have promised a quick election into a civilian transition.

Reacting to this occurrence and the involvement of the ECOWAS and AU in resolving the issues, Richard told Happy FM’s Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning show: “It has been the failure of the African Union and the failure of ECOWAS such that the very tenets of the Charter are not adhered to.

ECOWAS knows that bad governance is one of the things that causes instability in Ghana. Corruption is one of them. You [ECOWAS and AU] are leaders of Africa. You did not have the courage to tell the leaders of the various countries that what they are doing is not right; you cannot advise them”.

He furthered that it was high time the two organizations engage with soldiers who have taken over the governance of the country and create an enabling environment for democratic rule.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as Chair of ECOWAS has called on stakeholders in the Mali occurrence to join in a meeting as they come up with ways to return Mali to its democratic state. The event is expected to happen tomorrow, 15th September 2020 at the Peduase Lodge in Aburi.
