Independent Parliamentary Candidate for the Bekwai constituency, Kwesi Amofa –Agyemang has explained his decision to contest for the December 7 polls against his party’s candidate Joseph Osei-Owusu.

According to him, his decision to run as an independent candidate is because the various towns in the region have never seen any development over the years and he was referred to as a foreigner when he tried to contest for the parliamentary seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political show hosted by Afrifa-Mensah, Kwesi Amofa said, “Joseph Osei-Wusu said that the seat belongs to people from Bekwai and that no one will lead the constituency aside from them. Together with the constituency chairman, they referred to those of us from Asokore as a category B town. And I admit that I am from a village but I need to be an example for the people in my constituency”.

He indicated that the sitting MP for the constituency, Joseph Osei-Wusu has never set foot in the other towns in the constituency over the past eight (8) years and also accused him of only focusing his developmental efforts in his hometown.

“About sixty-nine (69) towns in my constituency have no toilets and that is the problem. Some areas had to share water for domestic purposes with livestock just because their boreholes had become faulty. I used my personnel funds to fix them and it cost me just about GH₵3,200. Why then were they left unrepaired for years?” he asked.

The lawyer furthered that roads in and around the constituency were in very deplorable states and one “becomes unrecognizable after reaching her/his destination because they would’ve been completely covered in dust”.

He believes he will have no moral justification to criticize the work of the incumbent MP if he refuses to contest for the seat and ensure the change he seeks.

Kwesi Amofa–Agyemang outlining measures to ensure equal development in all areas of the Bekwai constituency said, “I plan to zone the constituency such that all towns benefit from various developmental projects and that is my goal”.

Akwasi Amofa-Agyemang who was disqualified at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries announced his decision to contest the upcoming December elections as an independent candidate on the basis that his disqualification was unjust.

According to him, his disqualification was purposely done to favour the incumbent MP for the constituency, Joseph Osei-Owusu who has lost the goodwill of the people.
