Voting is underway today, July 11, in 19 polling stations across the Ablekuma North constituency.
The Electoral Commission (EC) initiated the rerun after electoral disruptions in December 2024 prevented the collation of final results.
Over 6,000 registered voters are expected to decide between two candidates, Nana Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
At a press briefing, Dr. Bossman Asare, EC’s Deputy Chair in charge of Corporate Services, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to a fair and transparent process. Security is being handled by the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Taskforce.
While the NPP has labelled the rerun “illegal” and in contempt of court, an injunction attempt to stop it was dismissed by the Accra High Court on July 9.
Despite her party’s official boycott, NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie chose to participate, expressing a desire to uphold the victory she believes she earned in 2024.
In a final campaign push, Afriyie said she was relying on “divine intervention” for success, while the NDC remains optimistic that their candidate, Aubynn, will claim the seat.
