ACEPA warns parliamentary impasse could cripple legislative business

The African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has raised concern over the ongoing impasse in Parliament, cautioning that it could disrupt legislative activities.

The warning follows a Supreme Court decision to halt Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling, which declared the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant.

According to the Executive Director of ACEPA, Rasheed Draman, the persistent legal disputes involving Parliament could weaken public institutions if not

He noted that some Members of Parliament are allegedly encouraging private citizens to challenge parliamentary decisions in court, creating a risky precedent.

The impasse, ACEPA indicated, threatens the smooth functioning of Parliament, warning that frequent resorts to the judiciary for the interpretation of legislative decisions may paralyze the institution in future.

He called for collaboration between the executive, legislature, and judiciary to resolve such challenges.

He emphasized that without dialogue among key stakeholders particularly the President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Chief Justice the situation could escalate and bring legislative activities to a halt.
