Government’s youth empowerment interventions recorded significant impact in 2025, with more than 24,000 young people benefiting from flagship skills and entrepreneurship programmes implemented through the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, made this known when a delegation from YFM paid a courtesy call on him as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration on youth-focused national initiatives.

He indicated that under the Adwumawura programme, 10,000 young people were trained to become entrepreneurs, equipping them with business development skills, mentorship, and the foundation to establish and grow their own enterprises. The programme is designed to move young people beyond training into actual business creation, with structured support systems including access to funding, such as the upcoming grant disbursement to selected beneficiaries.

In addition, the National Apprenticeship Programme supported 14,000 young people, providing hands-on technical and vocational skills across various trades, along with start-up kits to enable beneficiaries to begin work immediately after training. The initiative focuses on practical, demand-driven skills that improve employability and promote self-reliance among young people.

The Minister explained that these interventions form part of government’s broader push to address youth unemployment and underemployment through targeted, skills-based programmes.

With young people forming the largest demographic in Ghana — a trend consistent across many African countries — youth unemployment continues to pose a significant development challenge. He noted that initiatives such as Adwumawura and the National Apprenticeship Programme are critical in turning this demographic reality into an economic advantage.

According to him, by equipping young people with relevant skills, supporting entrepreneurship, and creating pathways into employment, government is working to build a more productive, empowered and economically active youth population.

He added that the results recorded in 2025 reflect growing momentum in the Ministry’s efforts to position youth development as a central pillar of national growth and social stability, with plans to expand these programmes to reach more beneficiaries across the country.

The YFM delegation was led by the Director of Broadcasting at Global Media Alliance Broadcasting Company, Dr. Timothy Karikari. Other members included Erskine Amo Whyte (Rev Erskine); Programs Manager for YFM Accra, George Nkunu; Head of Digital at GMABC, Mary Sackey ; Client Service and Partnership Manager, George Shackleford; Head of GMABC productions, Philip Ankrah; Media Executive and Judeliver Eli Ahasie; an Assistant Media Executive.
